Subfloor Preparation: The Foundation of a Floor That Lasts

HOME >> ADVICE

Subfloor Preparation Explained

Subfloor preparation is one of the most important and most overlooked parts of any flooring installation. Even the best flooring won’t perform properly if the surface beneath it isn’t right.

That’s why I assess subfloors carefully during every free home visit and explain what preparation is needed before fitting.

What is a subfloor?

The subfloor is the surface beneath your chosen flooring. This could be:

  • Concrete

  • Floorboards

  • Plywood or chipboard

Each type requires a different approach to preparation.

Why subfloor preparation matters

An uneven or unstable subfloor can cause:

  • Visible imperfections

  • Premature wear

  • Movement or lifting

  • Noisy floors

Proper preparation ensures your flooring sits flat, wears evenly and lasts as intended.

Common types of subfloor preparation

Levelling compounds

Used on uneven concrete floors to create a smooth, flat surface suitable for vinyl, LVT or laminate.

Plywood overlay

Often used over timber floors to provide a stable base for vinyl or LVT.

Repairs and stabilisation

Loose boards or damaged areas are secured before fitting begins.

Moisture considerations

Moisture levels are particularly important with certain flooring types. I check conditions and advise on appropriate solutions if moisture is present.

When preparation is needed

Preparation isn’t always required but when it is, it’s essential. I’ll always explain:

  • Why preparation is necessary

  • What it involves

  • How it affects cost and timescale

No work is carried out without your understanding and approval.

The long‑term benefit

Investing in proper subfloor preparation:

  • Improves the look of the finished floor

  • Extends lifespan

  • Prevents avoidable issues

It’s one of the key reasons professionally fitted flooring performs better over time.
